Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
The Cancer Community Center was established in 1998.
What is your primary product or service?
Our mission is to support and promote the well-being of people living with cancer, their families and their friends.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Jane Staley, the Cancer Community Center founder, believed that support was essential to healing. Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1994, Jane sought a place that offered support and information as well as a sense of community for adults affected by cancer. She soon discovered that support services commonly available in other parts of the country were, at the time, non-existent in Maine. This realization motivated her to organize a steering committee consisting of friends, business leaders, community leaders, oncology professionals and cancer survivors in the state, with a driven determination to establish a no-cost cancer support center dedicated to life and living.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
The Center provides many different programs in four general areas - emotional support, educational resources, wellness and creative expression. In addition to programs offered at the South Portland location, we operate the Maine Buddy Program, a statewide peer support network.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one physical location and do not have plans to expand at this time.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are at 778 Main Street in South Portland, on Route One, close to the Scarborough line.
What type of payments do you accept?
All of our services are provided at no charge to participants.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Kathy Young is our executive director. Our staff of six keeps all of our programs going!
What are your hours of operation?
The Center is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30 to 5:30 and Friday 8:30 to 3:00. Although the Center is not open weekends, we do have some Saturday programs.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
We often hear, "The Center is the place I can go where I get the support and encouragement I need because people truly understand what I'm going through."
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
Our tagline says it all - The place to start when you don't know where to begin!
